Planting Peas

March 8, 2026

On March 5 (Thursday), we ran some errands. Bruce dropped me off at the hairdresser’s and went to Walmart to pick up prescriptions. We had decided the divide and conquer worked.

The timing worked out great. I finished getting my haircut right after he arrived. An aside note, I like my new haircut.

Bruce drove the short distance to Lowe’s. We wanted to look at tub faucets. The tub faucet has water running down underside of the faucet. It looks like the water is getting behind the tiles.

Faucet Bottom Slopes Backwards Instead of Forward

Lowe’s only had kits with shower heads with the tub faucet. We did notice all the new faucets slopped forward, so water wouldn’t run towards the wall.

We headed home and ate lunch.

After letting my food digest some, I took my pea seed packets to start planting them. Bruce stopped by the garden on the way to do some more digging around the Pine Tree 1’s stump. I had just started planting the peas. He was surprised since I had been outside for a while. I explained I had spent most of that time tightening up the netting. I didn’t want it as loose as it was when we did the start of the set up. As he started to leave, I looked over at him and said, “They’s just little sprouts now, but one day they’s going to be big sprouts.” He stared laughing. This was a quote from my daughter when she was three. She was so excited about the pea sprouts in the garden.

Bruce continued on his way to work on digging out the stump. I planted peas needing trellising under the netting and then some self supporting peas.

After he got tired of swinging his pickax and digging with the shovel, he stopped by on his way to the barn to see if I was ready to give it up. I decided to join him.

We gave up for the day.

Friday (March 6), we were so lazy. We didn’t do anything but read and drink tea.

Saturday (March 7) morning, the forecast was calling for rain in the afternoon. To get ahead of the rain, I planted more self supporting peas. The next packet I planted didn’t say the peas were self supporting. The packet claimed the peas would only grow to be 24” inches. I am taking a chance they don’t need to be supported.

Peas Planted

Bruce took his chainsaw and cut logs from Pine Tree 3. He put away his chainsaw. He hung out with me as I planted the last of the peas. He asked me if I wanted to see what he had accomplished. I was interested, so we walked back to Pine Tree 3. I was impressed with the number of logs he had cut. I forgot to take pictures.

We walked around looking at our fruit trees and blueberries. The peaches and blueberries are starting to bloom. Once again, I forgot to take pictures.

While I didn’t take pictures of the fruit trees or blueberries, I did take some pictures of the violets.

As we walked back to the house, I noticed some blooms on the purple magnolia in the mist of the dead blooms.

I was very pleased how well the herbs survived the bitter cold we experienced earlier in the winter.

Left to Right: Thyme, Oregano, Scallions, Rosemary, Marjoram, and Rosemary

We moved another cart of dirt into the new bed. We felt that was enough work for now. We got showers and went out for lunch for sushi.

It started raining while we were inside the restaurant. Yay! The peas were planted so the rain meant I wouldn’t have to water the seeds in.

It rained all afternoon, with a bit of wind and lightning.

  1. Yay for getting the peas planted! It is always so nice to see all the green things you have going.

We enjoyed an afternoon of rain, thunder and lightning…and lost power again. It was off most of the afternoon, so we and the dogs took naps.

I am glad your magnolia has some new blooms! That was a nice surprise. Mine typically does not bloom until May, so we will see if anything happens.

  2. I love it…Bruce is out there with a chainsaw cutting trees and making logs while Julia plants peas. But come time to share the glory of all that hard work through a photos , Bruce is treated like a red haired stepchild. As a male, I fully understand this. The females plant a pea and it’s akin to humankind’s most monumental achievements, call Ken Burns stat. On the other hand, the males clear forests, erect the pyramids and we get no respect at all. Rodney Dangerfield, chime in here. Oh yeah, and as to new haircuts…pics or didn’t happen. 😁 😈
