My Father-In-Law Has More Setbacks

January 17, 2026

I had hoped to be able to share good news about my FIL. I am saddened to share it is not looking hopeful for a recovery.

His cognitive functions are decreasing. There appears to be three options right now. Hospice care at home, a hospice care facility, or a nursing home.

The family plans to have a conference call with the doctor tomorrow morning. This will help determine the next steps.

  1. Is your father-in-law able to weigh in on this, with enough cognitive function to know what he’s thinking? Hospice care at home made it much easier to cope with my husbandβ€˜s last couple of months. The mother of a friend of mine had a really good experience With her last days at a hospice facility. And my mother died in a retirement community, with hospice care in their nursing wing. Hospice is a wonderful organization. Unlike hospitals in general and nursing homes, they put the patient in the family first. Holding you all in my heart as you make this transition.

    1. Unfortunately, he does not have enough cognitive function to understand what is happening. His kids are leaning towards home hospice care. But a full-time caregiver will need to be hired and a hospice facility may be the best option. He just started going downhill very fast.

      1. He has lived a long, loved, and useful life. He volunteered for various charities. He helped with the Red Cross blood drives. He read and recorded books for the blind. He is Lion’s Club member and his chapter came to the hospital to give him a lifetime achievement award.

  2. I am so sorry for Bruce and you, Julia. I will say that Hospice was a blessing for both my parents when there was nothing else that could be done. The main mission is to ensure the person is not pain and not alone. They were very supportive.

    1. Thank you. Based on what the doctor says tomorrow, the family will come to a decision. My FIL did seem to be getting better and we were hoping he’d continue to improve. But he did take a turn for the worse and the doctors don’t know why.

    1. We hoped he would recover from this latest medical crisis. While Bruce and I helped out, Bruce’s youngest sister took on the brunt of his care. Thank you for your kind words and prayers.
