Warmer Temperature Made for a Busy Day

December 10, 2025

Yesterday (Tuesday, December 9), the temperature got up to 50°F. It was sunny, so Bruce and I removed the mulch covering the greens and radishes.

I opened the shed door to let the peppers get some sunlight. I plan to put grow lights in the shed. I am not sure how warm the shed will stay.

To prevent cold damage to the figs, I created cages to surround the two figs using half-inch hardware cloth. I stuffed the cages with pine straw and leaves. It took five cartloads to fill the cages.

While I was busy filling the cages, Bruce set the branches piled up in the fire ring on fire. I really thought it was going to be too wet for the fire to burn. He had a nice fire and later said it was like a good campfire. Once I was finished stuffing the cages, I helped Bruce carry the broken bits of a large pine branch to the fire. The large pine in the middle of the front yard lost a large dead branch in a windstorm.

As it started to get dark, I closed the shed door. Bruce and I covered the greens and radishes with mulch. Next year, I’ll buy more row cover for the winter.

Bruce put out the fire.

In the east, the reflected light from the sunset made for some lovely pink clouds.

The sunset was a beautiful deep color, almost red.

A very satisfying day!
