On Friday (May 9), we started to set up the first trellis.
We decided the trellis was too short for tomatoes. We are going to move it to the other side for the peas and foot long beans.

We went to Rural King, Lowe’s and Ace to find more metal electrical conduit. None of them had it. We did buy some heavy duty stakes at Lowe’s for my gate trellis. We were able to put up the gate trellis.

The gate was one we found on the property. It should hold up the small watermelons and pumpkins planted in the bed.
I put the birdbath in the front yard. It is easy to move, so if the spot it is in doesn’t work, I will move it. I need to find some stones to put in it.

Why put a few stones in the birdbath? From the http://www.birdinfomer.com:
- They prevent birds from slipping or sliding on a slick bird bath basin
- They make a great perch for birds that want to clean themselves without being submerged in water
- They add extra style and pizzazz to your otherwise attractive birdbath
- They help attract smaller birds
- They make the water level in deep basins shallower, which makes it easier for the birds to clean themselves or take a drink
My birdbath does have slippery sides and bottom.
I received Neem oil in the mail. I followed the directions and mixed up a quart as a fungicide. My fig trees have fig rust and I want to get it under control. I sprayed the fig leaves, bottom first then the tops.
I hope the rain didn’t wash it all off and it did some good.
The sunset was spectacular! We sat outside on the front porch, enjoying the smell of honeysuckle in the breeze. While we admired the sunset, I noticed fireflies out of the corner of my eye. I told Bruce that I saw a firefly and he started watching for them as well. We spotted several fireflies before they stopped flashing for the night. It made the spectacular sunset even more memorable.

You have the most gorgeous sunsets!

Seriously, you DO have gorgeous sunsets!! 🌅
I’ve tried every year to get my pumpkins and melons to trellis themselves, but the enjoy sneaking through the mesh and putting their fruit outside the garden where the (blasted!) deer can get them. Do you tie yours somehow? My plants are most uncooperative. 🙄

Yes, I’ll be tying them up. I have some Velcro strips I use to tie them up.
