Cool Weather Arrives

October 15, 2024

Last night, it was windy and the wind brought cool weather.

When I arrived at Blackberry Homestead this afternoon, I put frozen items into the freezer and some cold items into the refrigerator.

I had these tubes of various food items. I wasn’t sure how to store them in my new fridge.

I spotted a plastic cup and I had a flash of inspiration.

Putting the tubes into the cup makes them easy to see and get to.

I walked around the yard after putting the food into the fridge. I discovered more tree limbs had came down from all the wind. It was chilly outside, so I put on a windbreaker and moved branches to the burn pile and to the wood pile.

I decided to take some pictures of the back pasture. We are going to have to do a lot more clean up than the poison ivy removal.

In south Mississippi, where I grew up, in the forest you could find traces of railroad beds built to haul out the cut pine trees. The old railroad beds looked similar to the picture that is captioned “Railroad Bed?”. It was always exciting to find a railroad spike.

If it is an old railroad bed, it would be narrow gauge. It doesn’t seem wide enough to be a road, even a single width road. The tree in the middle of it has to be 40 to 50 years old.

The largest rocks in the ditch are about the size of my head. I do hope we can figure something fun to do with them. They are limestone, so they are relatively soft rocks.

    1. They were fun to find, curving through the woods. As a child, it gave me a feeling of a forgotten time. I could just imagine building a railroad to have a steam engine haul out trees for lumber. A time when horses and trains were the available power.
