Butterfly Weed in Grass Next to RV Park

August 31, 2024

I noticed a a plant with bright orange flowers in the grass between the woods and the RV Park. Many times, I noticed this plant had many orange butterflies sipping nectar from the flowers.

The plant is commonly called butterfly weed and is a native species of milkweed.

The main butterflies I have seen on the flowers have been the Gulf Fritillaries, which aren’t true fritillaries, but longwings. Gulf Fritillaries are a migratory butterfly species and head to Gulf Coast and Florida for the winter.

    1. I had to move very slow to sneak up on them. The butterflies seem to be gone now. They may have migrated on to warmer winter climes. (Though it is hot as blazes right now.)
