While in Claystone Park (April 24 to May 1), the loud, constant metallic sound we heard sounded like big man-made machines. Bruce discovered there was a shredding company nearby and it seemed reasonable that was making the noise. Since the noise seemed to come from different spots, we thought the lake and hills might be reflecting the sound.
The volunteer at the butterfly garden told us the noise was the cicadas. This is a special year, in that both the 13 year and 17 year cicadas broods emerge simultaneously.

I don’t believe I will ever experience such a phenomenon again. The last time both broods emerged at the same time was is 1803. The next time both broods will emerge at the same time is in 2245 and I am not expecting to be around then.
One year here they were so loud it was beyond annoying. It was like a continuous whir for days!

I live in a hilly area. A few years ago the cicada sounds bouncing around the hills was positively deafening. …and that was only one kind of them. You have my sympathy!

They stopped at night, which did allow us to get to sleep.

Cool that you got to hear all the cicadas. I have heard a few of them here in Minnesota in past years, but we are not in the right zone to experience the special 2 batches at once situation.

It was deafening at times. The volunteer said it was even worse at her house since it was completely surrounded by woods.
