Rock Island State Trail Wyoming Depot Access in Wyoming, Illinois

July 10, 2023

On July 4, we looked for a hiking location using Google Maps as we wanted to see more of the area. The Rock Island State Trail came up. It is a rails to trails conversion and based on pictures people shared, it looked like it was near water.

We rode south along the small back roads to Wyoming, Illinois.

When we arrived, the trail head was at an old depot building turned into a museum. The museum was closed for the 4th of July, so we didn’t get to see the inside.

We parked in the lot and removed our gear. I walked around and got some pictures of the front and of the playground across the street.

We looked around the outside of depot. They had a bicycle repair station and tire pump, as well as information about the trail.

We walked a mile down the shaded trail to a road. It was getting hot and after looking at Google maps, we decided we were not on the part of the trail near water. It is a 24 mile trail, so we didn’t arrive at the right place to see water.

It was hot! Bruce was hungry, so we thought it would be nice to find a nearby restaurant that was open and have a sit down meal in the air conditioning.

We geared up and rode through Wyoming, Illinois to the restaurant. The restaurant wasn’t open, but someone was picking up a delivery of pizza. The owner let us in and let us buy drinks. We had gone through the water we brought on the hike.

The air conditioning cooled us off while we picked out drinks and paid for them.

I wish I had been able to get pictures of the town of Wyoming. It had several beautiful murals and some interesting old buildings.

We rode home and when I removed my gear, I found my shirt was sticking to me from the sweat.

I was so happy to get into a cool shower!

Just let me stay here!

  1. This was a fun side excursion, Julia! I thought it was interesting about the trails, and agree that the library to library idea was a good one. The depot has been well-preserved and the town sounds interesting. My favorite it the photo of Nox though!

    1. Nox doesn’t want to play very much anymore. Her right shoulder hurts her a lot. When it doesn’t hurt, she overdoes with the walking and playing and hurts for the next two days. I wish there was more we could do.
