Harvesting Soybeans for Edamame and More Organization

July 9, 2026

On July 1, I did my normal garden rounds, and noticed the soybeans were ready for harvest. I harvested one side of the garden bed. The soybeans are planted on the long edges of one the raised beds while the caged tomatoes are in the middle of the bed. This worked great until the tomato jungle escaped the cages and caused the cages to fall over. Once I finished picking the soybeans, I was ready to head inside to get out of the heat. Ah, the blessed air conditioning!

Once I cooled down, I started putting items on the new shelves. I moved small appliances from the pantry and the pots along the step were also moved

We received the air mattress I ordered.

I helped unroll it and Bruce set up the auto fill. The mattress filled up in about three minutes. The before and after aren’t from the same angle. You can see better from the top Before and After pictures

For supper, I cooked the soybeans. We had fun eating edamame for supper. Growing the soybeans was a good use of space in the garden.

Edamame

At the end of the day, I felt I accomplished a lot.

    1. We call it the odd room. We don’t know what it was meant for. I had planned to turn it into a media room,. Bruce wants to use it as an air conditioned space to work on projects that he would normally work on in the garage.

  1. Yum…I LOVE edamame! How cool that you grew your own. The room looks great. I put a couple short wire shelving units in the storage area under my stairs and can’t believe how much more organized things are. I have a whole unit just for my cake decorating and dog treat supplies. Well done!

    1. Edamame is really easy to grow and prepare. I’ll do it again! I just finished picking more edamame. I think that will be the last of them this year. I might be able to stagger plant the soybeans next year so I get a crop from end of June to October.
It has made a huge difference to have the wire shelves. I feel so more organized. I can see all my small appliances on the shelves (except for my Kitchen Aid Mixer which remained on my counter) so I use them more since they are no longer hidden.

    1. We are going to see if the mattress will fit in my office when we have guests. We have left it inflated since Bruce filled it to see how it holds up. We’ve been happy with how firm it remains. We also wanted it to finish outgassing.
Bruce does like to nap between projects. But he heads to the bedroom for his naps. 🥱🛏️
