Father-in-Law Back to His Normal Mental Self

October 29, 2025

Yesterday (Tuesday, October 28), Bruce found out the doctors had already checked his dad for a brain bleed and other brain damage. There was none, thankfully. Bruce was told by the doctor that the anesthesia used was the same as before. Apparently having several procedures done so close together, can cause severe confusion in a patient, especially one who’s older.

They did discover a blood clot and they are using blood filter to deal with the blood clot.

Yesterday was very hard on Bruce. Because my father-in-law kept, as Bruce put it, “Dad keeps messing with the medical equipment. I just can’t get him to stop. I have to keep getting the nurses and he’ll listen to them and stop for a bit start for, then he’s back at it.”

The hospital authorized a sitter to sit outside the door. That apparently helped Bruce a lot. The sitter was able to get the nurses faster.

Today, Bruce was so happy to tell me that his dad is back to his normal mental state. The relief Bruce felt was so huge.

During Monday’s surgery, the the surgeon created a lattice to allow tissue to start to grow where it had been removed. The surgeon confirmed my father-in-law will have to have skin grafts.

Friday, they are expecting to put a new drainage device on his knee and then transfer him from the burn unit to a local hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Once he reaches the point, they can do the grafts they’ll bring him back.

They keep telling the family all of this is fluid and may change. It largely depends on how well my father-in-law does.

Bruce’s brother will be taking over from Bruce this weekend.

  1. You all must be exhausted going through this! I’m sure Bruce will be happy for his sister’s help yet sad to leave his dad. ❤️

(Does Bruce’s dad realize that he has been “different” the past few days? My folks couldn’t remember how they reacted after their surgeries.)
