I love walking along the beach at Jekyll Island. There were Gulf Fritillary butterflies on flowers growing on the dunes. (The Donald Fagen song “On the Dunes” just started playing in my head.)

The pelicans flew in formation on their way home for the evening.

As we walked down the beach, we saw five or six Ospreys soaring directly overhead. Maybe parents with their almost-grown chicks?

A driftwood tree stretched out on the beach.

Stupid question….can you eat sea oats?

It isn’t a stupid question. Sea oats generally aren’t considered edible. They are called oats since they look similar to the oats grown for food. They are protected, so damaging them or removing them is illegal and can result in large fines. Sea oats root systems stabilize the coastal sand dunes while the tall grass provides habitats for birds.
