Getting Chickens from Our Neighbors

June 23, 2025

On June 7 (Saturday), I got a text from our neighbor saying our ten chickens were ready. He had sent the text while Bruce and I were demolishing pine tree one. I didn’t hear the phone notifying me.

After I got cleaned up, I saw the text and responded back asking when we could come over to pick up the chickens. He replied later that day saying they would be at home all day tomorrow and to come over anytime then.

I spent some time rearranging the freezer so all ten chickens would fit in.

On June 8 (Sunday), I texted our neighbor asking if it was a good time to come and get the chickens. A short while later, I got a text back saying yes, I’ll put the chickens in bags for you.

We got in the truck, drove down our driveway and drove up their driveway to their bridge over the creek. (This is the creek that cuts into the northwest corner of our property by the road.) As we got most the way over the bridge, we heard a crunching sound. We got up to the top of the driveway, between his house and barn and parked.

Our neighbor came out with his daughter and they had chickens in bags. Bruce told him about the crunching sound and the neighbor was worried about our truck. The truck was fine. Apparently, a light from the bridge had fallen onto the driveway and one of the back wheels ran it over. Our neighbor just laughed about it since our truck wasn’t damaged. We offered to pay for the light, but he just waved it off. Apparently it was already broken.

We loaded the chickens into the truck and talked about his Martin houses. We’ve been seeing martins in our yard, perching on the trellises.

We got to hear about his plans and that he sold a couple of bulls. He asked us to spread the word about his chickens. So, if you live in northwest Alabama and want natural raised chickens for $5.50 a pound, contact me and I’ll send you our neighbor’s contact information. Since we needed to get home to put the chickens into the freezer we didn’t stay too long.

We drove home and put the chickens away.

We did some yard work in the back pasture, some moving of branches from pine tree three. We didn’t do a lot of yard work.

We’ve been seeing a lot of dragonflies in the back pasture. I hope they eat all of the mosquitoes!

In the front, we saw a cardinal in the grass beside the bird feeder along with a pigeon.

We enjoyed our beautiful evening watching the scattered fireflies rising up from the ground and flashing. We have a lot more fireflies now. When the fireflies start their flashing, it appears to be a carpet of stars drifting down the hill.

    1. The fireflies are the best surprise about Blackberry Homestead. I love the evenings watching the fireflies rising up and flashing.

The martins will be leaving soon according to our neighbor. I was disappointed to find out the martins will be leaving.
