Fireflies in Flight

May 31, 2025

On Wednesday (May 28), Bruce and I worked in the yard. Bruce unloaded the dirt he purchased from the truck into the lawnmower cart. Using the lawnmower, Bruce pulled the cart to the garden area and the north fence. He would unload the cart, placing the bagged dirt next to the fence. He made several trips. Once the dirt was unloaded, Bruce put the cart away in the barn. Off he went to mow the front yard.

Dirt Stacked Up and Ready to Use

I mixed 40 gallons of potting soil, in two batches of 20 gallons. My mix was one five gallon bucket of coco coir, one five gallon bucket of vermiculite, one five gallon bucket of Bama Dirt and one five gallon bucket of composted cow manure. It was a workout for my arms.

I filled 3 grow bags with the just made potting soil and planted the remaining sweet potato slips in them.

I partly filled 3 bottom drilled five gallon buckets with the potting soil. I plan to plant eggplants in the buckets. The soil level in the buckets is the same as the level for the peppers.

I harvested a nice salad from the garden to eat with dinner. Bruce cooked chicken thighs on the grill. (I am not the only one who enjoys cooking on a great grill.) I picked various lettuces, arugula, sorrel, scallion onion leaves and radishes. It was lovely with the delicious chicken.

After supper, we sat out on the porch. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

The fireflies were out in force. The yard looked beautiful with the large number of fireflies flying and flashing. The pictures of the fireflies in the yard didn’t turn out.

We had three fireflies right in front of us. They were so close, Bruce reached out and carefully caught one.

Bruce captured another one as it was flashing by.

The sunset was a spectacular show.

It was a very busy and productive day, with a glorious ending.
