Planted the Fig Trees

May 10, 2025

On Wednesday (May 7), in the morning, I pulled poison ivy from the other big pecan tree. In the fall, I had cut the poison ivy vines around the base of the pecan. I thought I had missed a vine since there were green leaves on a couple of poison ivy vines in the pecan tree.

I pulled poison ivy vines and roots from around the pecan tree. As I cleared around the tree, I found I had cut all the vines at ground level.

So, what was keeping the poison ivy vines in the tree alive?

As I pulled a vine from the tree, I pulled up on the vine at the deep “V” between the branches to try and get it out of the tree. As the poison ivy vine came free, I was surprised to discover long roots that came up with rotting leaves. That’s what was keeping the vine alive!

I discovered the second vine was a branch from vine I had pulled out of the tree. I cut the vines as far up as I could reach and pulled down the vines from the pecan tree. I had almost an entire contractor bag full of poison ivy!

I cut down some poison ivy along the fence that was sticking out into the yard. I completely filled up the contractor bag. I dragged the bag to the trash can that already had two contractor bags of poison ivy from Sunday. I picked up the third bag and dumped it in. It was about halfway out of the large trash can. I rolled the trash can to the end of the drive for trash pickup on Thursday morning.

I went in and cleaned up with my usual “I’ve been exposed poison ivy” routine.

Later in the day, Bruce asked me if there was anything else I wanted to do.

“Yes, I want to plant the figs.”

Figs Planted on Southern Slope

With the figs planted, I walked over to check on the baby pecans.

I filled the bird feeder again. The birds are emptying out the feeder in about one and half days.

After supper, I suggested we put up our last DeRubeis artwork, “The Abyss”. We hung it in our bedroom.

“The Abyss” is shades of blue. We will need to have better lighting for it. It looks dull in the current lighting. It shimmers and shines with different depths of blues in better lighting.

  1. Oh my goodness, is there anything poison ivy can’t do? You should contact the military about using your pulled ivy as a weapon. They could use it to keep people away from ….wherever!
