Walking Around Blackberry Homestead

April 23, 2025

If it isn’t raining, we spend some time every day walking around Blackberry Homestead. We are checking for problems and seeing growth on our plants.

On Tuesday (April 22), I had PT starting at 10:30 AM. The PT is an hour, but my physical therapist puts electrodes on the sore/hurting muscles and a heating pad after the PT. I get 10 minutes of an electric massage with heat relief. It feels great and is a wonderful reward for the PT.

After PT, Bruce and I walked to lunch at Sam’s Sports Grill. It was good bar food. I had a 9” pizza and ate half. Bruce had their burger, which was large. He said it was very good.

Since JOANN Fabric and Crafts has a store right by the physical therapist’s office, I wanted to stop in. They are closing and selling everything in the store, including fixtures. Bruce was very interested in the fixtures they are selling. He was impressed by the shelving. He could see using it in the garage. He is still considering it.

I picked up a couple of canvases and a scissor set.

While I was at PT, Bruce enjoyed wandering around Home Depot. It is next door to the PT office. He bought some new blades for his reciprocating saw aka sawzall.

When we got back home, we walked around Blackberry Homestead.

As we walked down the hill towards the pecans, we noticed black vultures in our neighbors’ front yard.

They had discovered a dead armadillo.

We decided to avoid the stench of death; instead we walked to the little pecan trees.

I need to put some more mulch around the trees to suppress the weeds and grass.

Bruce wanted to try out his new saw blades out. He used them on the trees in the fence row that are too large for the looper. We started on the north east corner and worked our way west along the north fence. If there was poison ivy, I pointed it out and Bruce skipped that tree or bush. We went around the entire north fence. We made good progress around the south fence as well. The south fence in the forests doesn’t have all the plants growing through the fence, so we didn’t have to do anything.

In the late afternoon, I started planting in the garden beds. I planted artichokes, bush beans, pole beans, tomatillos, zucchini and adzuki beans (aka red mung beans).

Bruce started mowing while I was planting seeds.

After I finished planting seeds, I realized my shoulder and back was unhappy with me. I didn’t stop in time.

    1. I am constantly surprised at how hard PT is when I am lifting weights. I thought I was in better shape. I tried to hold up the 10 pound kettlebell and had to tell my therapist it was too dangerous. I couldn’t keep control of the weight. I can handle the 5 pound one without any trouble.

      1. Was it that exercise where you hold the weight above your head and walk the length of the room? Do you have to do I’s, Y’s and T’s? (Those kill me.). I hope you start to see improvement quickly!

      2. Yes, that’s the one. I haven’t to hold the weight above my head and do laps around the room. I haven’t had to I’s, Y’s and T’s yet. Thanks. I hope the same for you.
