Emptied Out One Storage Unit and Most of the Second Storage Unit

February 24, 2025

On Sunday (February 23), we filled Cliff the Big Red Truck, full of boxes and items from the unconditioned storage unit. Our pickup truck’s bed was full of boxes and the backseat was full of other items. The truck’s tonneau cover should keep the items in the bed dry.

Today (February 24), we started the process to pick up a 20 foot U-Haul truck at 8:00 AM. Bruce left with the U-Haul truck at 8:30 AM and I followed with the pickup. We headed over to the unconditioned storage and emptied it completely!

After finishing emptying the unconditioned storage unit, we stopped by the office to tell them we no longer needed the storage unit.

We drove to the conditioned storage unit. I parked the pickup along the street and Bruce parked the U-Haul truck next to the door, but not blocking it.

It took us a lot longer to empty out the conditioned storage unit. It had furniture in it, so figuring out how to stack things and tie them up safely was a challenge. Our dinning table was a lot heavier than I remembered. We emptied the storage unit except for the massive two part china cabinet and Bruce’s rolling toolbox. They would’ve fit in the truck, but they were too heavy for us to move by ourselves.

When the movers moved the china cabinet, they wrapped it in plastic wrap. That is what you see on it.

I didn’t take a picture of the truck with all our stuff. We finished at 12:35 PM. It felt great to see the unit so empty.

We headed back to the hotel, took Nox for a walk, and walked over to Croc Soup Company for lunch. Lunch was lovely gumbo and a nice sandwich.

We rested at the hotel for a bit. Around 2:45 PM, Bruce had a brainstorm. “The toolbox is heavy because it is full of tools and I want my tools. Let’s take out the tools and put them in boxes. If the toolbox is still too heavy to move, we can leave it, but I’ll have my tools. What do you think?”

I looked at him and said, “I think it makes sense. You really wanted your toolbox because it had your tools in it. Let’s get your tools and see if the toolbox will fit up the ramp.”

The plan worked beautifully and the toolbox is now tied down in the truck. In the process of moving stuff around, I had a nosebleed. Seeing the blood, freaked Bruce out until I told him it was a nosebleed. He was afraid I had been badly hurt as blood was everywhere at first.

I did remember to take a picture of the truck fully loaded this time.

Toolbox Loaded and Tied Down

It took less than an hour to get the toolbox and tools into the truck.

Now we just have the two part china cabinet in the storage unit!

Of course, while loading the truck, I got a call from Bama Dirt. They wanted to deliver it tomorrow morning. I asked them to delay until Friday afternoon. She said she’d see what she could do.

In looking at all that empty space in the back of the U-Haul, we didn’t need to fill the pickup truck. Everything would’ve fit into the U-Haul truck.

We’ll be caravanning home tomorrow!

    1. Thank you! I am so excited to have almost all of our stuff. We have had great weather on the way home so far.

We made it to Topeka, Kansas for the night. It is more than a 3rd of the way home, but less than halfway. We expect to get home Thursday morning if all continues to go well.
