On June 22 (Saturday), Bruce drove the rental car up to Fort Collins from Golden, Colorado, so we could have brunch with an ex-colleague of mine. We had worked together for over twenty years and I was excited to see him and catch up with him.
I am just going to call my friend JC due to make it easier.
JC had assured me that the Silver Grill Cafe in Fort Collins was the best (or one of the best) places to have brunch in Colorado. JC loves to eat breakfast and brunch, so I wasn’t the least bit surprised that he had found a great place for brunch.
We beat JC there and even found parking, which is a trick in downtown Fort Collins. Bruce put our name on the waiting list at the restaurant and we got seated around noon.

After we ordered drinks, fresh squeezed orange juice for me and coffee for Bruce, we talked about what we wanted to eat.
JC arrived about that time and he already knew what he wanted, the chicken fried chicken (not a typo) and eggs with a Southern style biscuit.
JC suggested we turn my order of orange juice into a litter of juice. I agreed and we each got a glass to fill from the liter of orange juice.
I ordered two sides, loaded hash browns (potato’s with cheese, green chili, and bacon), extra crispy and sausage links.
Bruce ordered the Colorado trout and eggs, with the hash browns extra crispy.
A lot had happened in JC’s life since the last time I saw him. One of the big life changes was moving to Fort Collins, which we found out as we caught up with him while eating.
JC and Bruce enjoyed their brunch very much. Bruce’s one complaint was the potatoes weren’t very crispy. I was a little disappointed with my potatoes since they weren’t crispy either. I had better loaded hash browns at Invention in Milan, OH. I got a lot more sausage than I was expecting. I was expecting two links and I got five. It was delicious sausage.
I ordered a cinnamon roll at the end of the meal. I wanted a small one, but I was told they were out of small ones, so I ordered a regular sized one. I ate half and took half home for later. The cinnamon roll was delicious and I wasn’t the one heating up my house baking them.
The hash browns were potato slices and not shredded potatoes. I like shredded potatoes as hash browns better. They have more surface to become crispy.
Would I go back to Silver Grill Cafe? Yes, I would. Do I think it was worth driving 73 miles, one way, for the food? Not so much. Would I do it again to see JC? Yes, I would.
Yes, you do the drive for the people, not for the food!
