Walk Along the River in Vicksburg, Mississippi

April 6, 2024

After touring the Catfish Row Museum on March 28, we walked towards the Yazoo Canal to get a closer look at the paddle boat on the water.

We noticed this sign on the way to the water. The signs with information about the Confederate Army are red and the signs with information on the Union Army are blue.

We enjoyed watching the paddle boat docking.

We walked along the water, watching the boat activity and admiring the murals on the water side of the flood barrier.

As we started back towards the Old Train Depot Museum, we realized the paddle boat was raising the smoke stacks. We guessed they lower the smoke stacks to paddle underneath the I-20 bridge over the Mississippi River.

We walked along the flood retaining wall. It has murals of the historic events in Vicksburg. I will just share a few. Each mural has a plaque detailing what the mural is about.

We felt this was a novel way to present the history of Vicksburg and turn what would have been a necessary eyesore into something beautiful.

We arrived at the Old Train Depot Museum and Bruce made a friend. The cat walked right up to him and started meowing at Bruce.

Our tour of the Old Train Depot will be another post.

    1. It is a bunch of small stalls from different businesses under one roof. We had fun looking at the different items, but didn’t buy anything. I did like some of the handmade shirts and scarves, but space is limited in the RV. Bruce had a great time looking through the records. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside since the artist didn’t want that.

      1. I really enjoyed it. I love these types of places. Vicksburg has another one at the old Coke-Cola bottling plant. I thought we were going to stop in, but we ran out of time. We definitely want to stop back in Vicksburg and spend some more time.

  1. The murals are wonderful. As you say, they are a nice way to present information while also making the area more attractive for visitors. It seems like they are appearing more and more wherever we go.
