Quilt I Made as a Gift for my Mother-In-Law

December 17, 2023

When I was in my early twenties, I made a queen sized quilt for my mother-in-law. I knew she would cherish it.

I based the quilt off of a stained glass window I saw. The flowers and steams are hand appliquéd onto the “window” and then I hand quilted the edges. All the quilting was done by hand. I used my sewing machine to join the purple, yellow, and beige pieces together.

When we were visiting my father-in-law, I took a couple of pictures of the quilt. The lighting wasn’t the best for pictures, but you can still get the idea of the quilt.

    1. Thank you! She used the quilt for 30 years or so. I loved how well it fit with the furniture. I was impressed with how well the quilt held up. It still looks great, even after all that time and use.

    1. Thank you. I created the pattern myself on graph paper to get the design right. Next, I drew the flower petals on graph paper so they would be the right size when I cut them out. The vines were the hardest part. I spent a lot of time with a tape measure marking the lines on the green material. Since the vines are symmetrical, I folded the green material and cut it with scissors. I had pins all along the vines so the material wouldn’t move.

      1. Not from scratch. My mother’s mom used a quilt kit that had cross stitching patterns marked on top of a quilt. After she finished the embroidery, she gave it to me to finish. I stitched it together and quilted it by hand. It reminds me of the old time samplers girls would make to practice their embroidery.
